A Moment of Solidarity
A sign for immigrant dignity at the Clifton United Methodist Church becomes a point of unexpected connection.
Someone dumped some large pressurized canisters in my church parking lot (just another day of ministry in a local church) so I called the city who sent a police officer to come out and check it out. They aren't dangerous and everything there is fine.
After checking on the canisters, on the way back to his car, he saw our signs on the doors which say ICE is not permitted on our campus without a signed warrant by a federal judge. He stopped and said, 'Thank you for those signs. Thank you for being a place for all people. What ICE is doing is a disgrace to policing. It is just terrible. I hope people are starting to see.'
He's been with CPD for over 20 years.
I have to admit that conversation was not what I was expecting. I know I have my own prejudices to work out too. Grateful for moments of that redeeming kind of grace.
